Frequently asked Questions...

Q. How long is the life span of a the digital pen?

ImageA. The life span of the digital pen is about three years. This figure assumes that the digital pen is used for three hours a day.  (This figure is a guide and varies depending on actual usage.)

Q. Can I replace the built-in battery myself?

ImageA. No, replacing the battery yourself will void the digital penwarranty. Under normal conditions, a battery should be rechargeable for about 3 years.   Contact Adapx if battery replacement is required.

Q. How much data can be stored in the digital pen's built-in memory?

ImageA. Depending on the density of your writing, the memory capacity of the digital pen product is approximately 40 pages of 5½" X 8½" paper.  We recommend you transfer data to your PC before the memory in your digital pen becomes full.

Q. Does the digital pen have a "memory full indicator"?

ImageA. Yes, the digital pen vibrates to warn you when the memory is full.  If the memory is full, you cannot store new data in the digital pen.

Q. What is the accuracy, or limit of resolution of the coordinates, the digital pen can detect?

ImageA. The maximum address error the digital pen can detect is 1.0mm, or the sum total of the following conditions:

  1. Anoto® pattern resolution: 0.3mm (dot pitch is 0.3mm)
  2. Address errors calculated by the locations of the digital pen and Anoto patterns vary depending on the angle of the digital pen against the paper.  The maximum error is 0.7mm.

Q. Can I connect via Bluetooth?

ImageA. The Capturx digital pens have a built-in Bluetooth radio. Bluetooth support varies depending on the Capturx application. Please contact sales for more information about specific applications.

Q. Why does the digital pen vibrate?

ImageA. The digital pen vibrates under several conditions:

  1. When you perform an action with the digital pen, such as selecting a New Notebook check box.  In this case, the vibration confirms that the digital pen will pass on to the computer a request for a New Notebook.
  2. When you remove the cap from the digital pen. The vibration informs you that the digital pen is on, charged, and ready for use.
  3. When the digital pen detects a problem or error, such as when you attempt to write on severely damaged paper or the battery is low.

Q. Can I charge the digital pen without using my computer?

ImageA. Capturx digital pens recharge as they are docked to PCs using mini USB connectors. Those mini-USB connectors can also connect to many other power sources designed to charge cell phones or digital cameras such as battery powered USB chargers or USB cell-phone chargers used with wall sockets or automotive power sources.

Q. How long is the warranty on the digital pen product?

ImageA. The warranty for the digital pen product is 6 months.

Q. Will I lose any of the documents in the digital pen if the battery die?

ImageA. Will I lose any of the documents in the digital pen if the battery dies and I don't recharge it right away?

No, the contents remain until you download the documents to a computer or reset the digital pen using a Master Reset Procedure.

Q. If my digital pen is lost, can someone else see the information I have written with it?

ImageA. Yes, unless you have enabled password protection. With password protection enabled, the ink can only be downloaded if the correct password is entered.

Q. What do I do if I forget my digital pen password?

ImageA. After setting a password, the ink cannot be downloaded from the digital pen without password validation. If you use a password, include a good hint that will help you remember it. If you lose the password, you must reset the digital pen to enter a new one and this deletes the contents of the memory.

Q. Is the digital pen password protected when I receive it?

ImageA. The digital pen may contain a pre-installed password to protect your device. The pre-set password is adapx. Use the pen control panel to personalize and change the password. Passwords with mixed numbers, symbols and letters are your best protection with longer passwords being more secure. Be sure to use a good hint to aid your memory since a forgotten password will require that you reset the digital pen. Alternately, you can use the control panel to clear any password protection from the device.

Q. Is the digital pen waterproof?

ImageA. No, the digital pen is not waterproof. Do not immerse the pen in water or subject it to high humidity.  Adapx sells a rugged dock (which can be purchased separately) that when properly closed, will protect the pen to depth of 5 meters and to an altitude of 40 thousand feet.

Q. How often does the digital pen require recharging?

ImageA. If you use the digital pen  for 1 to 2 hours a day, you should recharge the battery every 3 to 4 days.  Recharge the battery every day if you use the digital pen for 3 to 4 hours a day.

Q. How long does a fully-charged battery operate?

ImageA. If the digital pen is left unused with the cap on, the battery lasts approximately two months. When the battery is low, a low battery warning LED lights up and the Penx vibrates.  If this happens, be sure to recharge the battery before using the digital pen.

Q. Can I replace the digital pen ink cartridge myself?

ImageA. Yes. Use the hole in the clip of the digital pen cap to extract the ball-point pen cartridge.

Q. Can I use a generic ink cartridge in my digital pen?

ImageA. No.  Obtain digital pen ink cartridge refills directly from Adapx. The ink cartridge for digital pen is unique. It is filled with a pressurized, proprietary ink formula designed for note-taking on our Rite in the Rain® digital notebook, in extreme conditions, and at any angle. (The ink cartridge is manufactured for Adapx exclusively by the Fisher Space Pen Co®.)
