Virtualisation
SERVERS
At Phormium, we subscrive to the philosophy that virtualisation is an enabling technology, not a solution in itself. As a means to simplify your IT infrastructure and manage cost by consolidating server hardware and reducing maintenance and support commitments, free virtualisation software makes a lot of sense. It also enables quick recovery onto new hardware, but consolidation is a potential problem without good contingency. Enhanced virtualisation, allowing fast or even seamless failver onto separate hardware mitigates against the 'all eggs in one basket' risk with basic consolidation.
Although this advanced virtualisation comes with an unavoidabe cost, the level of cost can vary wildly, so here at Phormium, we work with our customers to understand just what is actually needed, so we can accurately tie the cost to the performance required.
DESKTOPS
Desktop virtualisation (VDI) is the logical extension of thin client desktop deployment, using the same premise of centralised application deployment of Citrix/Terminal server and providing the same benefits:
- Thin client technology
- Lock down end user devices
- Centralised management of application deployment/update
But with the added performance enhancements of:
- The ability for users to have a much more tailored desktop, without having anything bespoke stored locally i.e. not just making do with a published desktop designed for various user groups
- Access the full desktop from any enabled location
- Full desktop-like performance on the areas that thin client struggles with e.g. USB compatibility, duplex audio, streamed graphics
- Flexible processor/resource allocation
- Desktop DR
At Phormium, we help our clients' IT teams to choose the right level of VDI for their user needs. No one size fits all, and our ethos is to provide a consultative approach to develop the right model for the circumstances.
